Ford is essentially starting over with its electric vehicle strategy. Instead of focusing on premium, expensive EVs, the company is rebuilding its approach around three key ideas: affordability, simplicity, and scale.
Ford says its upcoming electric midsize pickup could become one of the most important EV launches in years.
Why? Because it’s designed to be an everyday electric truck that more people can actually afford.

What Has Ford Announced So Far?
So far, Ford has shared a few important details.
The company is targeting a starting price of around $30,000, which would make the truck significantly less expensive than competitors like the Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, and Chevrolet Silverado EV.
Ford is also aiming for a 2027 launch. The truck will ride on the company’s new Universal EV Platform and will use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries.
While many details remain unknown, Ford has made it clear that keeping costs down is one of the project’s biggest priorities.
What Is an LFP Battery?
LFP stands for Lithium Iron Phosphate, a type of lithium-ion battery chemistry that has become increasingly popular in affordable electric vehicles.
Compared with other lithium-ion battery chemistries, LFP batteries offer several advantages:
- Lower manufacturing costs
- Longer battery lifespan
- Better thermal stability, which improves safety
- The ability to charge to 100% more regularly with minimal impact on long-term battery health
The tradeoff is that LFP batteries typically have lower energy density than some other battery chemistries, which can result in less driving range for the same battery size. For many buyers, however, the lower cost and durability make that a worthwhile compromise.
Why Ford Needs This Truck
In late 2025, Ford officially ended production of the all-electric F-150 Lightning as part of a broader overhaul of its EV business. Rather than continuing to invest in an expensive full-size electric pickup, the company shifted its focus toward more affordable electric vehicles.
Ford’s takeaway was straightforward: while there is demand for electric trucks, many buyers simply aren’t willing or able to spend $70,000 or more. Affordability remains one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption.
Ford’s next-generation electric truck appears to be its answer to that feedback.
What Is the Universal EV Platform?
Ford’s new Universal EV Platform is designed to simplify how the company builds electric vehicles.
Rather than creating a unique platform for every model, Ford is developing one flexible architecture that can support multiple future vehicles.
The company says the platform is being engineered with:
